Ask for each commercial minimum separately. The supplier response should distinguish the finished-goods MOQ, the MOQ for every printed or custom component, any master-carton minimum, required packing conditions, and non-recurring artwork, plate, die, or setup charges.
When a component minimum exceeds the finished-goods order quantity, request written terms for the excess quantity. Those terms should cover ownership, storage location, storage period, reuse controls, storage charges, and disposal responsibility. This excess-component commitment is part of the order economics and should be evaluated alongside the lower finished-goods MOQ.
Compare Pack-Out Options on the Same Quote Basis
Request the same product specification under a small set of clearly named packaging configurations. The purpose is to show which pack-out choice changes the MOQ, cost allocation, carton inputs, and approval evidence.

Separate Product Price From Packaging Exposure
Request separate line items for:
- Finished product.
- Retail packaging.
- Protective material.
- Packing or assembly labor.
- Master cartons and carton printing, where requested.
- Labels and other identification components.
- Non-recurring charges.
- Freight-forwarder inputs for each configuration.
For every line item, request the quantity basis and unit of measure. Also request the retail units per master carton, carton count, carton dimensions, net weight, gross weight, and freight assumptions. A freight comparison is meaningful only when destination, shipment basis, Incoterm, and carton inputs are held constant across the alternatives.
Record an MOQ concession as a specific commercial exchange. For this example RFQ scope, the protection allocation is **USD 0.15 per saleable unit**, calculated as USD 1.80 per master carton divided by 12 saleable units per master carton. The illustrative packaging-and-protection exposure is **USD 0.75 per saleable unit**, calculated as USD 0.42 retail packaging, USD 0.15 allocated protection, USD 0.07 label allocation, and USD 0.11 buyer reserve.
For the assumed 1,200-saleable-unit RFQ scope, the illustrative total packaging-and-protection exposure is **USD 900 for that order scope**, calculated as USD 0.75 per saleable unit multiplied by 1,200 saleable units. This is an example calculation only and must be verified against the supplier quote.
Use this structure in the RFQ workbook:
Packaging and protection exposure per saleable unit = retail-package cost + protection cost allocated per unit + master-carton cost allocated per unit + label cost allocated per unit + freight effect allocated per unit + agreed reserve or loss assumption
Keep the finished-product price outside this calculation. This lets the buyer see whether an apparent MOQ saving results from a supplier concession, lower packaging cost, a different carton density, reduced protection, or a changed freight assumption.
Make Shipping Protection Observable in the Pack-Out
Avoid an undefined request for secure packaging. State the pack-out details that must be visible in the approval sample and pre-dispatch evidence. Depending on the buyer's requirements, the purchase order can identify:
- Required closed-blade shipping condition.
- Required sleeve, bag, wrap, divider, or other protective component for each unit.
- Required internal support for movement, abrasion, or corner protection.
- Required master-carton fill, divider, void-fill, and closure arrangement.
- Required carton segregation, exterior identification, and palletization condition.
Request a pre-production pack-out sample that represents the quoted retail package, protective components, retail units per carton, and carton closure. Use that sample as the approval reference for the selected configuration. Request production evidence that corresponds to the approved configuration and define the records required before dispatch.
The buyer should also define who checks the pack-out, when the check occurs, acceptance and rejection criteria, and the response to a nonconforming configuration. Where the buyer requires a test, standard, certification, or other document, the RFQ should state the applicable version, acceptance criteria, responsible party, and current document required.
